KICKBOXING HISTORY:
Joe Lewis, the first Professional Karate Association (PKA) World Heavyweight Karate Champion was a pioneer of full contact Karate and fought in the prototype full contact bout in Long Beach California in Jan 1970. It was Lewis who contacted Karate innovator Mike Anderson with a view to organizing and promoting the new sport of full contact Karate, as it was called in those days. Full contact Karate now called Kickboxing, was officially born in Los Angeles in Sept 1974 when Anderson, together with Don ‘ The Dragon ‘ Wilson and Judy Quine, formed the first world Sanctioning body for the new sport and named it the PKA. They then promoted the first full contact World Professional Karate Championships, which saw the Americans Joe Lewis, Bill ‘Super foot ‘ Wallace and Jeff Smith claiming world titles. This was the beginning of modern Kickboxing. By 1975 Bill ‘ Super foot ‘ Wallace had become the first superstar of full contact Kickboxing. Another world champion, Benny ‘ The Jet ‘ Urquidez from the USA, promoted Kickboxing by travelling the world , including Asia, and then beating their best fighters in their own home towns under their rules! George Bruckner from Germany, who was a close friend of Mike Anderson, pioneerd full contact Karate in Europe. In 1975 Bruckner, together with other European martial artists, formed the World All Style Karate Organisation (WAKO). Bruckner worked very hard to advertise and promote the sport of Kickboxing all over Europe and promoted the first European Kickboxing Championships in Germany in 1976. In 1978 Bruckner promoted the first WAKO World Championships in West Berlin, with 18 countries competing. Kickboxing, was by this time spreading globally and had become an International sport. WAKO then changed it’s name to World Association of Kickboxing Organisations is now the worlds leading amateur Kickboxing organisation. WAKO conducts Kickboxing competitions in Semi / Light continuous / and Full contact as well as musical and weapons forms. The Headquarters are in Milan, Italy under the direction of the World president Dr Ennio Falsoni. In the USA a number of other world Kickboxing sanctioning bodies came into being, namely the WKA ( World Karate Association), ISKA ( International Sport Karate Association ) and WAKO-PRO.

- I have been studying Martial arts for 20+ years. - 1st in Traditional Karate, then Thai Boxing, British Combat (Mixed Martial Arts Fighting), Kickboxing and K1. -I moved to Holland with my parents and finished my education over there. -Thats where I got into Martial Arts by watching films of Bruce Lee, Chackie Chan and Jean Claude Van Damme, so I started to do Karate but I did not really like the Kata side of it (punch and kick patterns), I just liked to spar. -Then I trained in Thai Boxing when I was older which is very different to Katate as its more fitness orientated and you can use elbows and knees whilst sparring. -I trained at the same gym as Ramond ' The Diamond ' Dekkers he is now a Thaiboxing legend as he was the 1st European to beat the Thais and win a title in Thailand. -Then I moved Back to England and I started to do British Combat under Peter Constendine and Geoff Thompson which I enjoyed a lot as you use punches and kicks, but you can also take people down and grapple with them on the floor. (It was an early version of Mixed Martial Arts and is very good for Street Self Defence) which helped alot as I was a fully qualified Doorsupervisor for 10 years! -But deepdown I always enjoyed Thaiboxing, then I found Kickboxing, I thought I would try it as its very similar, but you dont use elbows and knees and I loved it. Unfortunatally the club I trained at was not the enough for be to become a high level fighter, so I started my own club -I trained hard as I could to win recoqnised titles, then from there I went to see Master Cris Janson-Piers ( WORLD PRESIDENT OF THE WFKKO and WAKO FULLCONTACT COACH TO GB). -I had to fight the best in Britain, but I finally got through and became a squad member of the WAKOGB TEAM -WORLD ASSOCIATION OF KICKBOXING ORGANISATIONS the largest kickboxing organisation in the world and I have represented GB at world level on many occasions.
I am also Mike 'The Count' Bisping's sparring partner at Wolfslair Gym.
-And now I wish to share my knowledge of Martial Arts with you at the RED PHOENIX ACADEMY.
Red Phoenix History
THE MEANING OF RED PHOENIX
-In Chinese mythology the Red Phoenix’ are birds that reign over all other birds. The males are called Feng and the females Huang . In modern times, however, such a distinction of gender is often no longer made and the Feng and Huang are blurred into a single entity. Its body symbolizes the six celestial bodies. The head is the sky, the eyes are the sun, the back is the moon, the wings are the wind, the feet are the earth, and the tail is the planets. Its feathers contain the five fundamental colours: black, white, red, blue and yellow. The Fenghuang has very positive connotations. It is a symbol of high virtue and grace. The Fenghuang also symbolizes the union of yin and yang. -In ancient Egyptian mythology and in myths derived from it, the Phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird. Said to live between 500 to 1461 years (depending on the source), the phoenix is a bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in Heliopolis ("the city of the sun" in Greek), located in Egypt. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible - a symbol of fire and divinity.
